Who We Are

Magarini Mangrove Community Forest Association (MMCFA) is a registered grass roots community association dedicated to the sustainable management, restoration, and protection of mangrove forests along the Magarini coastline in Kilifi County, Kenya. We operate under the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) participatory forest management framework, bringing together local community members who depend on mangrove resources to promote conservation, sustainable utilization, and improved livelihoods.

Key Achievements

  • Developed and operationalized a Participatory Forest Management Plan (PFMP) in collaboration with KFS and Nature Kenya.
  • Restored over 62.5 hectares of degraded mangrove forest using community nursery seedlings.
  • Supported 50 women and youth-led mangrove nurseries across the landscape, supplying over 5,000,000 seedlings annually.
  • Conducted bird monitoring, waterbird counts, and biodiversity surveys with trained local community scouts.
  • Engaged in joint patrols and monitoring to curb illegal mangrove logging and promote compliance.
  • Facilitated community-based ecotourism along the Sabaki Estuary.
