As outlined in the Magarini Mangrove Participatory Forest Management Plan (2025–2030).

Background

The Community Participation and Development Programme aims to enhance the involvement of local communities in sustainable forest management. Communities around the mangrove ecosystem depend on forest resources for their livelihoods, and strengthening their participation ensures better conservation outcomes, improved governance, and equitable benefit sharing. This programme empowers community institutions to be effectively involved in planning, decision making, and implementing conservation activities.

Management Issues & Challenges

  • Low community participation in forest management activities
  • Limited awareness of forest laws, regulations, and conservation practices
  • Poor coordination between communities and government agencies
  • Inadequate benefit-sharing mechanisms
  • Weakening of community-based forest organizations
  • Limited livelihood diversification opportunities
  • Inadequate training on governance and leadership

Programme Objectives

  1. To strengthen community participation in forest conservation and management.
  2. To improve the capacity of CFAs and village structuresto promote good governance and accountability.
  3. To enhance community knowledge and awareness on forest conservation, climate change and sustainable resource use.
  4. To support community livelihood initiatives that reduce pressure on mangrove resources.
  5. To promote inclusive decision making and equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms.

Key Management Actions

  • Conduct community sensitization meetings (barazas) on forest laws and conservation
  • Strengthen the capacity of CFAs through training on governance and leadership
  • Support community-led conservation initiatives and patrols
  • Enhance collaboration between KFS, NEMA, County Government, and communities
  • Develop and implement community livelihood programs such as beekeeping, mariculture, and ecotourism
  • Promote community education on climate change and environmental stewardship
  • Train community members on sustainable harvesting of forest products
  • Establish platforms for participatory decision making and conflict resolution
